Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) :

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a flagship program of the Government of India that aims to provide financial assistance to pregnant and lactating women. It was launched on January 1, 2017, and is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The primary objective of PMMVY is to improve the health and nutrition of pregnant women and lactating mothers, thereby reducing maternal and infant mortality.

Janani Suraksha Yojana  (JSY) integration:.   PMMVY has been integrated with Janani Suraksha Yojana, an already existing government scheme that provides financial assistance for institutional deliveries. This integration ensures a comprehensive support system for pregnant women and lactating women. Provides support up to 6 months of age. The cash incentive is aimed at compensating wage loss and ensuring proper nutrition during the critical stages of pregnancy and lactation

Financial Assistance: Under PMMVY, eligible women get a cash incentive of Rs. 5,000 in three installments. The first installment of Rs. Rs 1,000 is given for early registration of pregnancy (within the first trimester). 2nd installment of Rs. Rs 2,000 is provided after at least one antenatal check-up is completed. The third and final installment of Rs. Rs 2,000 is given after the birth of the child and on completion of the first cycle of vaccination of the child.

Conditions: To avail of the benefits of PMMVY, women have to fulfill
certain conditions such as registering their pregnancy at the nearest Anganwadi center or approved health facility and attending regular check-ups.

The main features of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana are as follows:

Eligibility: Women aged 19 years and above who are pregnant or lactating and belong to below-poverty-line (BPL) families are eligible for the benefits of PMMVY. This scheme covers all the states and union territories of India.

Nutritional Support: PMMVY recognizes the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy and lactation for the healthy development of both mother and child. The scheme lays emphasis on the provision of adequate and balanced diets to pregnant women and lactating mothers. This support helps ensure women have access to the nutritious food, essential nutrients, and dietary supplements they need for their well-being.

Dietary Counselling: Under PMMVY, beneficiaries receive dietary counseling and guidance to stay healthy and balanced diet during pregnancy and lactation. This counseling is provided by health professionals, Anganwadi workers, and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs). It educates women about the importance of consuming a variety of food groups, including fruits, vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and dairy products, to meet their nutritional needs. Iron and calcium supplementation: Anemia is a common concern during pregnancy and lactation. To address this, PMMVY ensures the provision of iron and calcium supplements to eligible women. These supplements help prevent iron and calcium deficiencies, which can have a significant impact on the health of both the mother and the growing fetus. enough iron and Calcium intake aids in healthy blood production, bone development, and overall maternal well-being.

Immunization Support: PMMVY promotes timely immunization of newborns to protect them from preventable diseases. The scheme encourages mothers to ensure that their children receive all necessary vaccines as per the recommended immunization schedule. Immunization support under PMMVY helps protect the health and development of babies and their susceptibility to various infections and diseases.

Health Checkup and Antenatal Care: PMMVY lays emphasis on regular health checkups and antenatal care for pregnant women. Beneficiaries are encouraged to attend regular prenatal checkups, where healthcare professionals monitor their health, provide necessary medical intervention, and address any health concerns. These tests help in the early detection of any complications or health risks, allowing for timely intervention and proper management.

Health Awareness and Counselling: PMMVY focuses on increasing health awareness among pregnant women and lactating mothers This includes counseling sessions that educate women about important health practices during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Women receive guidance on aspects such as breastfeeding, hygiene practices, self-care, and the importance of seeking timely medical help when needed. The health and nutrition benefits provided under PMMVY are aimed at improving maternal health, reducing the risk of complications, and supporting the optimal development of the child. By prioritizing the health and nutrition needs of pregnant and lactating women, PMMVY contributes to healthier outcomes for both mothers and their children, thereby ensuring a brighter and healthier future for all.

conclusion:

The importance of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana in promoting maternal and child health in India. This would emphasize the need for sustained efforts to ensure that all eligible women can access the benefits of the scheme and further strengthen the healthcare infrastructure supporting pregnant and lactating mothers across the country.
